At a recent apartment association meeting during open questions:
Me: Can you tell me when the association can think about getting us broadband service? We live in the center of town (a city of 300,000 in the center, 500K total) and we have to connect to the internet via our phone lines.
Board member: Yes, the cost to us is a factor...
Old woman (who has lived there for at least 30 years):
Yes! We shouldn't have to pay for all that traffic! It is bad enough as it is with the trams, buses and cars!
(Board member and I exchange confused looks)Board member: I don't know what you mean exactly...
Old woman: With all that traffic going through the walls, they already have the internet going through the wires in the telephone lines...now they want to have even more and faster...I don't think it's safe!
Board member: As I said, Ah hem, we have had this discussion before...
Me: I understand, I am sorry to say, but I do, I think.
Can you believe she was NOT the only one who thought that all the talk of bits and speed meant that the cyber traffic was actually going to impact the traffic congestion in our neighborhood?
