I work for a web hosting company doing phone support. While talking with a customer in regards to uploading their web site we were unable to get them connected to the server. I followed my normal troubleshooting list (firewalls, pop-up blockers, correct settings, etc) and was able to connect to the server myself, but was still unable to have the client connect.
Trying an alternate method of browser FTP I asked the client to open Internet Explorer and to type in the FTP address. Just after I requested they open their browser they told me that they would have to connect to AOL in order see any webpages.
"You haven't been online while trying to upload?", I asked.
"Oh? I have to be connected to the internet in order upload to my site?"
Trying not to sound TOO sarcastic I respond, "Well, yes. Have you ever made a phone call without picking up your phone?"
