The setting: Demonstrating new software to the users via WebEx.
Demonstrator: "To change the date, click this button, enter the new date (calendar widget included), click OK."
Results: the date on the screen changes from the old to the new date.
User: "Can you make that send an email so we know it took?"
Demo: "Uh...It's right on the screen."
User: "But if we got an email, we'd know that it stuck. And can you make the software send an email to the 3rd party, too?"
Demo: "You mean send an email to the person whose email address is right beside the new date and hyper-linked with a mailto link so when you click it, a new email opens with their address on the TO line and the document number as the subject?"
User: "It sure would be helpful if everyone got an email that the date changed."
Demo: Or...you could look at the screen, see the new date, then click the mailto link, compose a brief email, and send it to the 3rd party."
User: Oh...OK, that's a lot of work. Can you make the software do all that for us?"
Demo: Silent facepalm and prayers of thanks to the FSM for remote demos where the user can't see you mime a shotgun blast to the face.
