Interviewing for a two-week position
PART I: MEETING WITH MANAGER
...
me: So it's okay that I will only be able to work here for two weeks?
Manager: One of my workers won't be back from Europe for two weeks, so that will be perfect (for you to work during the gap)! Plus we really need people.
me: I feel better. Since you were willing to consider my situation, I'd be happy to come in on an as needed basis during these two weeks [pointing to "available times" section on my application]
...
M: Great, so your interview is at 9:30 tomorrow morning (not one of the times I put down, but I didn't argue because I thought the manager was cool).
PART II: MEETING WITH MANAGER'S BOSS, NEXT DAY
Manager's boss shows up 18 minutes late, tells me she wouldn't hire anyone if they were this late to an interview, proceeds to explain the road construction condition, and says if not for the manager's reminder call this morning she would've forgotten all about my interview.
...
Manager's Boss: Yes, (manager's name) told me you would only be available for two weeks. But she was very impressed when she met you and I am, too. So if you could come in at 11 tomorrow morning, I think she put you down for the 11am-2pm shift.
me: Ok (thinking, I said I wasn't availabel at 11... got to call the manager tomorrow morning)
CALL FROM MANAGER, SAME DAY
Manager: I have you down for 11-2 tomorrow, and looks like Thursday and Friday too.
me: Ok, (manager's name). One quick thing, I won't be available before noon and thought I had put that down.
M: You did. But isn't there ANY way you can come in earlier?
me: ... (no! and why did you have me fill in my available time then?) I'll try my best.
M: Ok, so see you at 11 tomorrow.
CALL FROM MANAGER, 1 HOUR BEFORE WORK
Manager: I've been thinking about this and sorry, I have to back out.
me: ...
M: I lost sleep over this. I think you're a cool person and it was definitely great to meet you. I hope it doesn't leave any hard feelings!
me: ...That's okay. Could I ask what made you change your mind?
M: I guess I can't risk my bonus on this.
me: ?
M: (Manager's Boss's name) said you'd only be able to stay for two weeks.
me: Oh I see. I guess I didn't make myself clear about the two-week availability period from the beginning...
M: Well I know you'd be a fast learner, but it'd take two weeks just to train you.
me: Alright, good luck with the store!
M: And good luck to your future, too!
